HANS ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES

9"X 7"

Illustrated by Louis Rhead
Harper & Brothers; 1914.

Bound:

1998

Dimensions

9"X 7"

The book is bound in full bright green cape morocco, with butterflies cut into the board covers. The butterflies are hinged and inset with magnets to allow their wings to open out from the board covers or to rest flush into both front and back covers. When the wings are opened out, the underside of butterflies as well as yellow suede flyleaves may be seen through board covers. The butterflies are tooled in gold with mosaics of cape morocco, chagrin, oasis, and box calf leathers. The butterfly bodies are three- dimensional to encourage the illusion of butterflies in flight. The book is titled in gold on the spine and all edges are gilded. Clam shell style box. Bound in 1998 for Constance Crowley Bowles Hart Peabody (1919-2016.)

Butterfly models:
Buckeye - Junonia Coenia
Anise Swallowtail - Papilio Zelicaon
California Dog Face - Zerene Eurydice
Western Checkerspot - Euphydras Chalcedona
