MACBETH

William Shakespeare. Knickerbocker Leather and Novelty Co., New York.

Dimensions:

Miniature format: 3" x 2" x 1/2"

Bound:

2008

The book is bound in full black chagrin (goatskin) and tooled with designs of whirlpools and flames representing the demise of Macbeth’s kingdom. Within the whirlpools are three sets of gold tooled eyes representing the witches, or fates. The whirlpool on the front cover is tooled with mosaics in shades of purple, the back cover in shades of grey and the flames in shades of green. Leathers used include cape Morocco, chagrin, Oasis, and box calf.

Within the flames and whirlpools the crowns of the kingdom are seen to be caught and drawn down into chaos. Each cover has a cut-out in the shape of a crown, Macbeth's on the front and Lady Macbeth's on the back, with the positive shapes mounted on the fly leaves. The crowns are tooled in gold and palladium. When the book is closed, the crowns visually become part of the boards, and when opened the crowns appear to fall away continuing the illusion of the downward fall of the kingdom.

The doublures are marbled paper framed with a gold tooled line and the fly leaves are of purple and grey suedes.

The book is titled on spine in gold to follow whirlpool design. All edges are gilded. The book is protected with a clam shell style box.
